Topic of the special issue
Biosurfactants have been the focus of many researches due to their advantages with comparaison to chemical surfactants like lower toxicity, better biodegradability and production using low cost substrate and renewable raw materials. Several industrial companies are producing different types of biosurfactant (rhamnolipids, lipopeptides, sophorolipids …), with focus on different applications (pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, antimicrobials and bioremediation….).
Even with all these new developments and increased interest by prominent business-houses, the economically availability and wide-spread applications of biosurfactants are still limited. The major reason is the availability of comparatively cheaper chemical surfactants and higher cost of biosurfactant production.
Several researchers have reported different ways to tackle higher production costs by applying statistical optimization methods or by use of cheaper agro-industrial waste products. Different types of biosurfactants were reported.
This Special Issue will contain a collection of papers written by authors who are leading experts in this field that will stimulate the continuing efforts to understand the biosurfactants diversity, to develop new technologies that can lead to potential biotechnological developments, and also for the use of biosurfactants in different areas of bioindustry. Potential topics include, but are not limited, to :
· Biotechnological biosurfactants application.
· Structural and functional characterization of biosurfactants.
· Low cost media for biosurfactant production.
· Statistical tools for optimization of media or process for large scale biosurfactant production.
· Innovations in engineering techniques for improving biosurfactant productivity.
· Biosurfactant success stories- from laboratory to market.
